Nutrition basics

Calories and macros, explained simply

CaloVibe shows numbers because they can help you understand your meals. This page explains what those numbers mean without turning food into a math problem.

What is a calorie?

A calorie is a measure of energy. Food and drinks bring energy in; your body uses energy for basic functions, movement and recovery. In nutrition apps you will usually see kcal, which people simply call calories.

The daily picture

1
Calories in

Food and drinks you log.

2
Calories burned

Energy your body uses through daily life and activity.

3
Trend

One meal matters less than your daily and weekly pattern.

Why can too much be a problem?

If you regularly take in more energy than your body uses, the extra energy can be stored by the body. Over time this may make it harder to keep a comfortable, healthy weight. One day or one meal is not the issue — the longer-term pattern matters more.

Can too little be a problem too?

Yes. Your body needs enough energy for everyday function, movement, focus and recovery. Eating very little can also make it harder to get enough protein, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. If you are unsure about your needs, speak with a qualified professional.

What are macros?

Macros is short for macronutrients. In everyday food tracking, it usually means protein, carbohydrates and fat.

P
Protein

Helps with muscles, recovery and feeling full. You often find it in meat, fish, eggs, dairy, tofu, beans and lentils.

C
Carbs

A common energy source. They include foods like rice, oats, bread, potatoes, pasta, fruit and many vegetables.

F
Fat

A concentrated energy source that also supports many body functions. Oils, nuts, seeds, avocado, dairy and fatty fish contain fat.

Why portion size matters

The same food can mean very different numbers depending on the portion. A small bowl of pasta and a large bowl of pasta are not the same, even if the recipe is similar. That is why CaloVibe estimates portions from your photo and lets you review the result.

Why every value is an estimate

Photo-based tracking is fast, but nutrition values are never perfect. Oil amount, sauce, brand, hidden ingredients and serving size can all change the result. Use the numbers as a helpful compass, not as an absolute rule.

How to use the numbers well

  • Look at daily and weekly trends instead of judging one meal.
  • Notice which meals keep you full and balanced.
  • Adjust the result when you know the portion was different.
  • Treat the values as information, not pressure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between calorie and kcal?

In nutrition apps and food labels, kcal is the technical unit most people call a calorie.

Why does CaloVibe show protein, carbs and fat?

They help you understand the structure of a meal, not just the total energy.

Can a photo estimate be 100% accurate?

No. It can be very useful, but real food varies by portion size, recipe, brand and preparation.

Does CaloVibe give medical advice?

No. CaloVibe provides informational estimates and does not replace a doctor or dietitian.

What CaloVibe can help with — and what it cannot

CaloVibe is built to make everyday food tracking faster and easier, but it is still a tracking tool, not a medical professional.

CaloVibe can help you

  • quickly estimate calories and macros from a meal photo
  • notice daily and weekly eating patterns
  • compare meals in a simple visual diary
  • track calories burned together with food intake when Apple Health is connected
  • build a more consistent habit without typing every ingredient

CaloVibe cannot

  • guarantee perfectly accurate nutrition values from a photo
  • replace a doctor, dietitian or medical diagnosis
  • know every hidden ingredient, sauce, oil amount or exact brand
  • create a personal treatment plan for health conditions
  • decide what you should eat without your own judgement and context
